Cape Town - The next time you casually reach for a plastic straw for your juice or soft drink, think about this turtle writhing in pain as researchers extract one that got lodged all the way up its nostril. We know we surely will.
Chris Figgener, a Marine Biology PhD student with Texas A&M University doing research on sea turtles in Costa Rica and the Caribbean, posted this video to youtube and it has gone viral with over three-million views.
It shows the research team, assured the object lodged in the sea turtle' s nostril was not a parasite that might have been attached to part of its brain, removing a 10cm plastic straw. It's heartbreaking to watch the turtle reacting and start to bleed as they do so - but the footage highlights the effects of consumerism and the state of plastic in the oceans across the world.
