Cape Town - The Garden Route’s Sedgefield hosts the 21st Tortoise Tuff, set to take place on Saturday, 10 March.

Participants can choose between four races for the event hosted by Sedgefield Striders.

All the races will start at the Sedgefield Primary School field at the following starting times:

  • 10km run/walk - 07:15
  • 30km walk - 06:00
  • 30km run - 07:00
  • 21km trail run - 07:10
  • 2.5km fun run - 08:00

“All the races take place in and around Sedgefield, giving those taking part a grand tour of some of the village’s most beautiful areas,” says Sedgefield Striders.

“The flat course of the 10km event has always been popular amongst the ‘speedsters’ of both the running and walking sectors,” it says, adding that this race also serves as “official ASWD Race Walking Trials to select a team for the SA Road Walking Champs later this year”.

Runners looking for something more challenging can choose the 30km course which covers some of Sedgefield’s climbs, drops and flats on both gravel and tar.

“It is an ideal training run for Two Oceans and a great ‘target distance’ for those who normally stick to half marathons. Walkers are also welcome for this event, but should take note of the 4 hour cut off time,” says Sedgefield Striders.

The Trail Run is also a challenging course along the beach, through the Goukamma Nature Reserve, and “some serious ‘dune work’”.

“Cape Nature’s co-operation makes it possible for runners to enjoy stunning views and almost untouched trails as a reward for the hard work-out this event will provide for the ever-increasing market of adventure racers,” adds Sedgefield Striders.

For those who want to take it easy there’s the 2.5km fun run.

Prize money is up for grabs for male and female winners of the 30km, 10km and 21km races, with age category prizes also on offer.

Timing for the races will be electronic – Athletes will have their time electronically recorded via a microchip as they cross the finishing mat.

The Tortoise Tuff 10km, 30km and trail run are pre-entry events, but entries for the fun run will be accepted on the morning of the race.

Participants can enter by downloading an entry form from the website, enter online through www.aswd.co.za or get forms from the Sedgefield Tourism office, Top Gear Sport in Meade Street, George and Tekkie Town branches in the Garden Route.

Registration will take place at Sedgefield Primary School from 17:00 to 19:00 on Friday, 9 March and from 05:30 on race day.
