When planning a holiday, we are usually most concerned about what we can afford. Therefore we end up visiting destinations that are not necessarily our first choice but the first choice for our budgets and we end up postponing our dream vacation until a day when it won’t be a burden on our pocket. But with careful planning and saving you can make sure that your dream destination does not stay a dream. It can be a place on your bucket list that you can tick off.
So what is worth saving for? We have compiled our ultimate list of holiday destinations that are pricey, but worth all the delayed gratification:
1. Zürich, Switzerland
Switzerland is rated one of the top choices for solo travelers and all you need to easily get around the country are good hiking boots and a Swiss Rail Pass. The country’s capital, Zürich, is a cool, vibrant, multicultural place with a modern, cosmopolitan elegance – something the Swiss manage to pull off perfectly. Whether your dream is to enjoy the beauty of this Swiss city in summer (think Heidi) or ski in the Alps in winter, Zürich is the luxurious destination you are looking for. You can check out the art at the Kunsthaus and the Rietberg Museum, shop at Bahnhofstrasse and Niederdorf, or laze around Lake Zurich. There are endless options available.
2. New York City, United States
There is a saying that goes ‘New York is always a good idea’ and especially so if you have always wanted to see the sights that have become synonymous with Woody Allen films, Friends, and Sex and the City. But the prestige of ‘the city that never sleeps’ means that it is quite pricey to travel there. So make sure to save for your NYC vacation. Go to the top of the Empire State Building, visit the Statue of Liberty, and see the pieces at the Museum of Modern Art, walk over the famous Times Square and ride in a yellow cab.
3. Venice, Italy
There’s a romance to Venice. Cruise the Grand Canal in a gondola, view the gorgeous mosaics of the Basilica di San Marco, and sample local cuisine and wines. However, the floating city may not be floating for much longer - flooding has been increasing for years, and scientists are wondering exactly how long Venice can stay above water. A recent study at the University of Padua in Italy has charted the city’s apparent sinking, while architects are saying that the watery immersion is compromising building foundations too. It is truly worth saving up now to see this ‘living museum’ and be emerged in history, beauty and culture.
4. The Great Barrier Reef, Australia
The largest collection of coral reefs in the world, The Great Barrier Reef, is a must see even if just to gape in awe at its beauty. It is one of the Seven Wonders of the Natural World and should be on the bucket list of every diver as it offers a one-of-a-kind display of underwater life that we can guarantee you have never seen before and will not see again. The Great Barrier Reef may also not be around for much longer as it has suffered damages due to rising temperatures and increased pollution, leading up to 93% of its famed vibrantly coloured corals beginning to turn white. It really is one of the world’s natural wonders and since there are no guarantees about how long it will survive it would be wise to enjoy it now while you can.
5. Rio de Janeiro, Brazil
Host to the 2016 Summer Olympics, Rio de Janeiro and its endless stretches of beaches, lush countryside and ancient culture have never looked more appealing. Also known as the marvelous city, Rio de Janeiro is a city that is alive with culture and spirituality. From the famous beaches of Copacabana and Ipanema, the breathtaking Corcovado Mountain, and the epic Rio Carnival that takes place in February/March every year, there are endless possibilities of fun in this paradise city. It’s a destination in and of itself, where one could spend weeks or months before leaving and still not really get the full story.
