Cape Town - Sometimes custom officials have hard days as well.
A Chinese custom official at Baiyun International Airport got the fright of her life when she discovered over 200 cockroaches crawling in an elderly couple's luggage. Like most people, she cried when one of them popped out of the bag.

According to BBC, red flags were raised when the x-ray machine showed lots of moving black items in a plastic bag. Airline regulations ruled that living organisms are not allowed in hand luggage, and thus the bag had to be left with the security. What happened to the creepy crawlies afterwards is unknown.
And the reason for carrying so many with them?
To be used in ointment for the wife's skin. "They were part of an old folk remedy. You mix the roaches in some medicinal cream and put it on your skin."
COCKROACHES. IN. SKIN. CREAM.
I'll give you a moment to let that... sink in.
Imagine if they made it onto the plane, and then got out of the bag ... And you were their lucky seat neighbour. Forget snakes on a plane. This is what real nightmares are made of.
