Cape Town – Paris, London and Venice were nominated as the top three most elegant cities in the world, and this comes as no surprise with them being the fashion capitals of the world.

The Mother City is holding its own when it comes to a cosmopolitan lifestyle and street style - ranking 52nd in the most elegant cities in the world list by Zalando

According to the online shopping portal, an elegant destination is defined by its cultural landscapes and unique architecture. Zalando conducted their study in determining the most elegant city in the world by analysing the culturally significant architecture, a booming fashion scene, tourism desirability and accessibility, as well as how affordable this elegant lifestyle is to locals.

Cape Town's diversity obviously creates a sweet mixture of traditions and cultures, while locals can attest to its innovative and artistic vibe.

The highest score for accessibility to the lifestyle of elegance was given to Cape Town - and it also ranked well for the quality of fashion schools found in the city.

Our architecture reflects the history of the country and during the early years of colonialism Cape Town served as a key port for trade and as a result, there are strong Asian and European influences to be seen across the city.

We decided to take a look at the most iconic architecture sites and fashion events of South Africa that draw travellers to our shores.

Proudly South African structures and architecture

Bosjes Chapel

Tourists and locals flock to the Breede Valley to capture the iconic and minimalist instagram eye-candy of Bosjes chapel - but there is more than meets the eye with this structure. According to Deezeen, the chapel was constructed by Steyn studio of London and the architects gained inspiration from the biblical passage Psalm that read, "How priceless is your unfailing love, O God! People take refuge in the shadow of your wings". The inspiration is clearly reflected in the building as it spreads its 'wings'.

The Silo

An architectural marvel was created from the old historic grain silo and is home to one of the most exclusive hotels in South Africa, The Silo Hotel. The Zeits MOCCA museum is a part of the now trendy Silo District and features as Africa's first contemporary art museum. Thomas Heatherwick architects are responsible for the structure and it has been placed on the Conde Nast Traveller's 2017 hot list. According to Designboom, Liz Biden is responsible for designing each of the hotel rooms with eclectic pieces for individuality.

Boomslang Kirstenbosch

Kirstenbosch Gardens serves as a haven for man and nature to meet - often hosting concerts, picnics or just days when you laze about on the grass. The Boomslang Walkway was opened to the public in 2014 and was a collaboration between Mark Thomas Architects and Henry Fagan and partners consulting engineers. It functions as a viewpoint to gaze upon the gardens from an elevated position.

Bo-kaap

The thriving and vibrant area of Bo-kaap is a Cape-Malay community that is well known for its brightly coloured houses. According to the Bo-kaap, the houses were painted an array of colours as a symbol of freedom from apartheid. During apartheid, locals were not able to own their own homes and once they were given the chance too - they took control of their homes by painting them. Tourists and locals flock to this area for the best authentic spices in Cape Town.
