Cape Town - NASA probably knew what they were in for when they asked people on social to name the seven new Earth-sized planets around a single star, residing some 40 light years away.
But boy oh boy, they got more than they bargained for. The internet took hold of the #7NamesFor7NewPlanets hashtag, suggesting some of the most creative and most hilarious names for the new planets.
The discovery of the planets, which are all about the size of Earth or smaller, was announced at the NASA headquarters in Washington last week.

Three out of the seven planets are located in the habitable zone, one of them likely to have liquid water.
"Looking for life elsewhere, this system is probably our best bet as of today," said Brice-Olivier Demory, professor at the University of Bern's Centre for Space and Habitability and one of the authors of a paper on the planets around TRAPPIST-1, a small, ultracool star.
TRAPPIST-1, however, isn't a very cool name... So these are some of the suggestion the internet came up with for the star and its seven planets.
