Jinjing, a South American Magellanic Penguin, was saved by João Pereira de Souza, a 73-year-old part-time fisherman who lives in an island village just outside Rio de Janeiro in Brazil.
João found Jinjing at a local beach lying on rocks, covered in oil. After cleaning off the oil, he fed the penguin a daily diet of fish to build his strength. When Jinjing was healthy enough, João attempted releasing him into the beach, but the penguin kept returning until one day when he left at his will.
However, a heart-warming bond developed between the pair and according to Wonder World, Jinjing now swims 5000 miles (more than 8000km) annually to reunite with the man who saved his life.
“Every year the penguin leaves to the breeding grounds and then returns to João,” says Wonder World, adding that to Jinjing, João is now like family.
