Cape Town - As the largest private air show in South Africa took place over the past weekend, including some spectacular aerobatic displays by pilots showcasing their skills at the Rand Airport - we take a look at how a five-tonne Airbus jet engine is replaced hours before take-off - and excitement is an understatement for plane enthusiasts.

The Virgin Atlantic 2-minute video shows off its engineers replacing an A340-600 engine of the aircraft, 27 hours before it flew across the Atlantic.

The team of six engineers from the airline carefully remove one Rolls-Royce Trent 500 engine from the wing of an Airbus A340-600 before installing a fresh one.

Jet engines are required to undergo routine maintenance after flying for a certain number of hours.
