The school holidays are around the corner - 24 June to 18 July to be exact. And there can be nothing more depressing for children of any age to either to be stuck at home, facing the entire break without anything to do.

We're sure many of a parent has thought about the costs of a family holiday and how expensive things are at the moment.

Festivals

Spar Kirkwood Wildlife Festival

When: 24 Jun 2016 – 26 Jun 2016

Where: Kirkwood School Grounds

One of the biggest events on the Eastern Cape’s social calendar, the Kirkwood Wildlife Festival usually attracts up to 45 000 people to the Sundays River Valley. While it has game farming and agriculture at heart, it’s a fun event for the whole family. Expect delicious hearty meals, fascinating displays, loads of quaint crafts and whole lot of entertainment aimed specifically at the kids.

National Arts Festival 2016

When: 30 Jun 2016 - 10 Jul 2016
Where: Grahamstown, South Africa

The Grahamstown National Arts Festival, organised by the Grahamstown Foundation attracts over 50 000 people each year and is South Africa’s biggest arts and culture festival to date. Arts, music, theatre and crafts take centre stage and over 500 different performances, ranging from music to dance and opera.

Jbay Winterfest 2016

When: 6 Jul 2016 - 17 Jul 2016

 Jeffreys Bay , South Africa

The 4th edition of the Jbay Winterfest takes place from the 6-17 July 2016 in the coastal town of Jeffreys Bay. The much-anticipated event, which superceded Billabong Pro, sees scores of international and regional athletes, as well as thousands of spectators, flock to the surfing capital for the country’s premier waves festival. 

Outdoor adventures and sporty fun

SA vs Ireland

When: 25 Jun 2016

Where: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

Haul out the green and gold face paint and dust off those flags for an international test rugby clash of note, as the Bokke take on Ireland.

Town Lodge Business Night Relay

When: 28 Jun 2016

Where: Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium

This unique relay event is aimed at running or walking teams of five with each covering a 3.5km lap of the stadium. Entry is open to all sorts of groups – businesses, schools, running clubs, social clubs – and makes for a good exercise in team building.

Junior International Polocrosse Tournament

When: 15 Jul 2016 – 17 Jul 2016

Where: Port Elizabeth Polocrosse Club grounds

An exciting weekend of top class Polocrosse as the SA Juniors take on their Australian adversaries. Join us at the Port Elizabeth Polocrosse Club grounds at plot 71 Kragga Kamma Road for high speed skills and horsemanship. There will be entertainment for the kiddies as well as food vendors and bar facilities. Plenty entertainment for all!

With delicious food, intriguing crafts and plenty of space for kids to play, markets are always a good idea for a family outing. A few noteworthy examples in and around PE include: Back to Earth Organic Market at the Old Cash Store, Lady Slippers Farmers’ Market and Wedgewood Family Market

Bayworld

When: Throughout the holidays

Where: Beach Road

Oceanarium meets snake park meets natural history museum – no wonder Bayworld has remained one of The Bay’s biggest tourist attractions. Treat the kids to an entire day of learning about nature while having fun. Highlights on the Bay World calendar include seal and penguin feeding, as well as snake interactions. It’s sure to be a memorable experience for all. 

Sacramento trail

When: Whenever you need to get some blood pumping through the family’s veins

Where: Sardinia bay

This popular 8 km round trip coastal walk through the Schoenmakerskop-Sardinia Bay Nature Reserve offers attractive seascapes, landscapes and even some bird-watching opportunities. At Schoenmakerskop, a bronze cannon points towards the wreck site of the Portuguese galleon, Sacramento, which foundered on 30 June 1647.
