Cape Town - If you're looking for spoil your loved one this Valentine's Day, it's best advised to keep it local - if you want to spare a buck or two, that is.

This is according to international online florist Bloomy Days, who conducted a Valentine’s Day Price Index 2017 to better understand the varying global costs of celebrating romance.

After observing that the average price spent on Valentine’s bouquets varied largely from city to city, the online flower retailer researched the costs of popular Valentine's gifts and activities around the world, with the study revealing that location greatly impacts the cost of romance.

They investigated the average costs involved to purchase a dozen red roses, a day ticket for two to a spa, a meal and wine for two in a Michelin star standard restaurant or equivalent, an evening for two to the movies (with snacks), and a night in a luxury hotel.

Cape Town, SA's very own Mother City, placed 18th on the Valentine’s Day Price Index, with an overall cost of R9 000 for all activities considered.

While it may seem a little steep when compared to the most affordable romantic destination according to the study, Prague in Czech Republic, Cape Town still fares well against the rest of the typical 'romantic' places.

And come to think of it, R9 000 for a luxury stay, a world-class culinary experience, romantic activities AND gifts for two people isn't half bad.

In fact, Cape Town ranked as the most affordable city worldwide to buy a dozen red roses - costing an average price of R300, as well as the most affordable city worldwide for two cinema tickets with snacks - costing an average price of R140.

Prague places in first place with an overall cost of just over R6 000 for an entire romantic Valentine’s celebration, while Los Angeles in the US is the most expensive place to go to - it will cost you almost R18 000 for a romantic experience.

Unsurprisingly, Venice in Italy ranks in second place as the most expensive destination to celebrate Valentine's Day.
