Cape Town - Having a good time with your family shouldn't cost a fortune. That's why we've sourced 22 of the very best family experiences to do in and around the marvellous Garden Route, along South Africa’s south coast, for under R160.

Whether you're into outdoor adventure, good food, science, fiction, art or going to the movies - we've got the best of the Garden Route on a budget, right here: 


1. Redberry Farm 
There are plenty of activities, like strawberry picking, maize running and paddle boating, to choose from - all for under R35. 

 




2. Paintball
Get rid of the festive season frustrations with paintball war. It costs R160 for 200 paintballs at Garden Route Paintball.

4. Cango Caves 
The Heritage tours (60mins) cost R85 for Adults and R50 for Children. The Adventure tours (90mins) cost R105 for Adults and R65 for Children.

5. Stormsriver Mouth Hike  over the suspension bridge 
This hike is only 2km long and costs R45 per adult, per day and R22 per child, per day (South African citizens). If you own a Wild Card, you go free!

6. Robberg Nature Reserve
Entrance R40 for adults, R20 for kids.



7. Birds of Eden 
Rates for Birds of Eden or The Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary is R190 per adult and R95 per child aged 3 to 12. There is also a special COMBO rate for R300 per adult and R150 per child and enables you to visit two of the three sanctuaries on the premises.


8. Knysna Heads 
Get the best views on this side of SA's coast for free.

9. Lawnwood Snake Sanctuary
Tickets cost R160 for adults, R120 for teenagers (aged 13-17), and R80 for children (from 2-12)



10. Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary 
Rates for Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary or The Jukani Wildlife Sanctuary is R190 per adult and R95 per child aged 3 to 12. There is also a special COMBO rate for R300 per adult and R150 per child and enables you to visit two of the three sanctuaries on the premises.


11. Radical Raptors
R120 for adults, R100 pensioners and students, R90 for kids 3-12 years (2 years and under are free) 



12. Walk to the Big Tree
This spectacular 4.2km walk is absolutely free.

13. Swartberg Pass 
Take a drive through this iconic pass for free!


14. Go surfing 
This won't cost you a thing, but will get you up close and personal with the mild Indian Ocean that stretches along this coast.

Take a free hike to this iconic viewpoint.

16. Bartholomeus Dias Museum Complex 
Get the full experience, including going on the replica of Dias's ship, for under R40 


17. Let’s Go Bowling
Bowling is included in the stay at MountView Resort and Lifestyle Village. Visitors pay R10.


18. Outeniqua Power Van 
Adults: R 140-00 per person; Children: R120-00 (3 to 15 years)
