Cape Town - Wondering why you've been unable to take advantage of one of the best panoramic views of the Mother City over the past two weeks? Take a look.

Table Mountain Cableway has been closed since Monday 27 July and will re-open on the bonus last day of the upcoming long weekend.

From the pics below you will see it's been a busy time for the cableway technical team. They have even called in the help of a team of Swiss engineers, "in order to meet the highest global cableway standards set by the Swiss Governing Body for Cableways (BAV)".

Yep, it's all in the name of safety folks. So what do they actually get up to?

According to Table Mountain Cableway, it’s business as usual with this year’s work, which has seen the cleaning of the ropes and slack rope tests, renewing switches and bearings where necessary, servicing of the main gearbox, generators and backup generators, as well as general electronic component changes and control checks.

“This year’s maintenance has also included a haul rope change,” says the Cableway’s Technical Manager Gaziem du Toit. Something that takes place every 5 years or so.

The cable car cabins have also undergone a facelift.

If you're planning on treating the family when they re-open, be sure to make the most of the Kidz Season special that offers two children under 18 years a free return trip if they are accompanied by a full paying adult (valid over weekends, public and school holidays until 31 October).

If you've celebrated your birthday and are feeling a little short-changed during the closed maintenance period, since South Africans get a free return ticket on their birthday on presentation of a South African ID - fear not, since you're still entitled to redeem it one week after they re-open between 10 – 17 August.
