Cape Town – The upcoming Wavescape Surf and Ocean Festival will focus on women in its 2017 lineup of ocean-conscious events.

A festival that was born out of a love to surf has evolved into a plight towards a greener environment and clearer waters.

The role of Women

The festival will showcase the abilities of South African female scientists, artists, photographers, and activists who utilize the ocean in their platforms to advocate for change. A focus on the ocean and marine life are echoed throughout the event.

Wavescape will premiere the all-women surf film, Blue Road and showcase Light Waves, a photographic exhibition of women surfing by Saskia Koerner. The poster of the event indicates the focus on the feminine as it depicts a woman surfer morphing into a tentacle sea monster below the surface.

Festival director, Shani Judes shares her excitement for this year’s focus, “This year we are particularly chuffed to have so many more women taking centre stage and dominating our line-up. Pollution and global warming affects us all and we are all able to help effect that change."

The core favorites such as the Artboard project, Slide Night, Film Festival and Blue Ocean Master Class will feature a strong female presence.
