The school holidays are around the corner - 24 June to 18 July to be exact. And there can be nothing more depressing for children of any age to either to be stuck at home, facing the entire break without anything to do.

We're sure many of a parent has thought about the costs of a family holiday and how expensive things are at the moment.

Tulbagh Christmas in Winter 2016

Christmas in South Africa occurs in the height of Summer, characterised by braais and refreshing dips in the pool. Steam Train day trip to Spier

When: 3 Jul 2016

Where: Departure from Cape Town Station to Spier just outside Stellenbosch

Another old-fashioned experience to charm the socks off both kids and adults – a classic steam train ride! Hop on the Atlantic Rail steam train at Cape Town Station at 09:30, arrive at Spier an hour or so later and then spend the day exploring this fascinating Stellenbosch wine estate. The train will leave Spier at 16:50 again.

Hop On - Hop Off 3-for-1 Kids’ Special

When: Throughout the school holidays

Where: All around Cape Town

Enjoy seeing your city through a tourist’s eyes and keep the kids entertained at the same time with an outing on City Sightseeing’s Hop On – Hop Off bus. For every one adult ticket you buy, two kids (under 18) get to ride free. What a bargain!

Table Mountain Cableway Kidz season

When: Throughout the school holidays

Where: Table Mountain Cableway

Another 3-for-1 special, as two kids (under 18) get to ride the cable car for free with an adult who has purchased a return ticket from the Lower Cableway Station. What’s not to love?

Even though winter has officially arrived, the Western Cape’s host of magnificent markets are forging ahead. With loads of food, drinks, crafts and space for kids to play, it’s a perfect family outing. Some notable options include Route44 Market (Stellenbosch), Oranjezicht City Farm Market (Granger Bay), Hermanuspietersfontein Market (Hermanus), Bay Harbour Market (Hout Bay) and Lourensford Market (Somerset West).

Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival 2016

Classical music lovers, the Stellenbosch International Chamber Music Festival is back from 1-10 July 2016 at Stellenbosch University. Heralded as the biggest event of its kind on the African, the festival focuses on classical orchestral performances and public classes led by acclaimed and award-winning local and international artists.
