Cape Town - 68 new hotels, 29 033 hotels rooms all in Saudi Arabia will be a record, according to a new report, Saudi Arabia Hotel Construction Overview carried out by Top Hotel Projects, prepared exclusively for The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia 2017.
With nearly 30 000 new hotel rooms to open in Saudi Arabia- Riyadh, Jeddah, Al Khobar and Makkah are set to be the busiest areas for hospitality development.
The anticipated Abraj Kudai Towers is amongst the new hotels to open this year and it will be the world’s biggest hotel with 10 000 rooms.
Hotel groups and tour operators are presented with a great opportunity as the country’s thriving religious tourism sector is expected to pull in over 20 million arrivals by 2020 according to data released by the consumer insight company, Canadean.
The Saudi government is investing heavily in new hotels and spending more than US$13 million (approximately R170 million) a year renovating historical religious sites. One of these hotels is the Abraj Kudaj.

“The largest hotel in the world Abraj Kudai is forecast to open in Makkah, whilst new brands are entering the market, harnessing the Kingdom’s potential at a time of major growth for its tourism, leisure and hospitality industries in the wake of the launch of Saudi Arabia’s National Vision 2030,” says John Suzara, Event Manager of The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia 2017, taking place in Jeddah in April.
The only luxury hotel group property is the Rocco Forte Hotels’ Assila Hotel, located in Jeddah, which is opening on 12 March 2017.
Christian Renz, Vice President Sales at Rocco Forte Hotels says that it is important for them to have representation in the Middle East, as they have such a large client base coming from this region particularly from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.
Nobu Hospitality and Rocco Forte Hotels are international brands that will enter the Saudi Arabian market for the first time this year.
“Jeddah itself is also a very fast developing city. We have seen much growth over the last few years. We are very optimistic that Assila Hotel will soon be well known as one of the best hotels in the region,” added Renz.
The Hotel Show Saudi Arabia will be having its fifth edition this year, with big names already confirmed for the three day event. This is the first time that it will be held in Saudi Arabia.
