Cape Town - What started out as an already exciting wild dog kill, turned out to be an epic, once-in-a-lifetime sighting when a pack of scavenging hyenas stumbled upon the action.
While on a safari with Wilderness Safaris, professor Peet Van Der had a front-row seat to a pack of wild dogs trying to catch their prey inside a small waterhole...
The Lechwe fought the wild dogs, but when a pack of hyenas arrived, it stood no chance.
The video shows the poor Lechwe desperate trying to fight off the hyenas and the wild dogs, but all in vain. But this is not where the action stopped...
Disheartened by the loss of their first meal, the wild dogs went on to make another kill - this time an impala.
According to Latest Sightings, "The dogs were feasting on their successful kill when all of a sudden, the hyenas appeared out of nowhere and laid claim to the meal.
"Sneaky as ever, the hyenas didn’t miss a beat and headed right back into action in order to snatch the buck out of the wild dogs' way."
It seems as if it really wasn't the dogs' day...
